The association's members painting over MBJB's yellow paint marking the stalls lots
JOHOR BARU: To express their frustration at the interference by the local council, the Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association repainted the numbering of stalls of the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.
The association was unhappy that MBJB had numbered the stalls along the cultural street without informing them or asking for their permission.
It claimed that the street "belonged" to them as in 2009, former Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had given the jurisdiction of the whole street to the association.
On Monday, the top management of the association, together with other Chinese association representatives, used black to paint over the yellow numberings along a 500m stretch of the street.
Association president Datuk Tan Lian Soon said their action was to show that they "strongly opposed" MBJB's action in allocating the trading slots on Sunday without informing them or asking for their permission.
Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is located near the JB Bazaar area where traders sell secondhand goods, clothes, vintage items, food and beverage every evening from 5pm.
