Groom wants extra dowry over fat bride

A MAN demanded additional dowry of Rs500,000 (RM26,753) from the bride’s parents because he claimed his future wife was fat, reported Malaysia Nanban.

In an incident that led to protests outside the Machavaram police station in Kerala, South India, Vikram Naidu from Hyderabad had agreed to marry a girl whose parents had agreed to pay a dowry of Rs1mil (RM53,506).

A few days before the wedding, Vikram reportedly told the girl he would marry her only if her parents gave him another Rs500,000 because she was “heavy”. The groom even suggested that the girl shed 20kg if the parents did not want to pay up.

Stunned by the request, the parents made a police report with the help of local political leaders.

Tension arose when a police officer scolded a political leader who came to help the girl’s family.

Party members staged a protest against the officer calling for action to be taken against him.
