KUALA LUMPUR: Asking questions such as whether Malay rights group Perkasa was funded by the government would only lead to divisions, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup told Parliament.
To a supplementary question by Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru) on action that was taken against Perkasa over its threat to burn the bibles, Kurup said that the matter was for the relevant authorities to address.
A brief shouting match ensued when Sim asked if Perkasa was funded by the government, prompting Kurup to retort that such questions by the Opposition "did not unite but divide the people".
Sim wanted to know if the government's funding of Perkasa contradicted its efforts to unite the people.
Kurup said all politicians should not react to religious and racial provocations by certain quarters.
"There is no need to react to such provocations, especially if they are religious in nature.
"It doesn't matter what your political affiliations are, please avoid such provocations," he said to a query from Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamad (BN-Lipis) on efforts by the government to address the issue over increasing incidences of racial provocation by certain quarters.
