ALOR SETAR: A freak thunderstorm left a trail of destruction, damaging more than 50 houses and flats in Langgar near here.
Houses in Kampung Telaga Bata bore the brunt of the storm with one having its entire second floor blown off by strong wind.
House owner Mohd Sabri Dun, 48, was at a mosque in the area when the storm struck at about 4.15pm yesterday.
“I got a call from my wife who was alone at home, telling me that the wind had blown off the second floor,” said Sabri, an entrepreneur.
The father of five said he only realised the extent of the damage after the rain stopped and he saw that the roof and other parts of the house had landed about 50m away.
“I renovated the top floor of my house less than a year ago and now it is gone,” he said.
He said fortunately nobody was injured.
“My children were at school. They usually study on the second floor at night,” he said.
Robiattan Ismail, 33, rushed home from work after her frightened mother called to say that the storm had ripped off the roof of their home.
“We have lived here for more than 30 years and have never experienced a storm this bad,” she said.
At the Taman Setia Jaya flats nearby, residents of 16 units had to be relocated after the roof tiles were blown away by the storm.
