Emotional send-off for school prefect

PETALING JAYA: It was an emotional affair for the loved ones attending the funeral of 17-year-old SMJK Katholik student Chin Yeong Peng, who was killed in a road accident during a school trip.

Former schoolmate Janson Kam, 20, said Yeong Peng was a free-spirited person who always made the “peace” sign when having his photographs taken.

“He had a flair for juggling the toy Diabolo (Chinese yo-yo) and was always showcasing his skills in the prefects’ room,” said the ex-prefect at the funeral service held at the Chin family residence in Section 17 here yesterday.

Yeong Peng was pinned under the wreckage of a chartered bus when it turned turtle at a bend near Kampung Nanding at about 1.30pm on Monday. He was among a busload of prefects from the school returning from a leadership camp at Lembah Azwen Resort in Hulu Langat.

Four others were injured while the 48-year-old bus driver escaped with minor injuries.

Saw Kai Boon, 22, who accompanied Kam at the funeral, said he attended the funeral as a show of respect.

Grief stricken: Yeong Peng’s family bursting into tears as they look at his face one last time at the funeral.

“The accident was tragic but it could happen to anyone. I didn’t know Yeong Peng personally but he was one of us. That’s why we came here,” said the university graduate.

The former students were among scores of Yeong Peng’s family, friends and teachers paying their last respects at the funeral, which started at 9am.

Some 200 students from the school were also present at the service, including those who had attended the leadership camp with him.

School head prefect Lee Zhou Feng led the students in giving Yeong Peng a final salute as Amazing Grace was played in the background.

Yeong Peng’s parents were overcome with emotion as pall-bearers prepared to carry the coffin into the hearse.

“I want to see you. I miss you,” sobbed his 38-year-old mother Candy Chung, who was in Australia during the accident.

“You’ll forever be Mummy’s sweetheart,” she said as her husband, 54-year-old Chin Ah Fatt, consoled her.

Yeong Peng’s body was brought to the Nirvana Memorial Park in Shah Alam for cremation.
