UEC struggle will go on, says MCA

PETALING JAYA: MCA will never give up its struggle for the Government to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), said its Youth national chairman Chong Sin Woon.

He told the Chinese community not to doubt that MCA would always stand by its side and fight for its interests, as it had done for years.

“MCA has always been working to obtain government recognition for the UEC.

“We are still positive that we can be successful in this effort of ours through internal communications and negotiations between MCA and the Government to achieve a win-win situation,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He was responding to a statement by Education Minister II Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, who said the UEC was not recognised as it did not follow the national education system, nor was its standard similar to the national curriculum for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia.

Chong said that although it was a slow process, MCA had succeeded in gaining gradual recognition for the UEC, adding that since 2010, UEC students could apply for loans from the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN).

Besides this, he said UEC students who achieved distinctions for Bahasa Malaysia and three other subjects could qualify to enrol in teacher training colleges.

“We have also persuaded the Government to recognise degrees from universities in Taiwan and China.

“The final step to full recognition of the UEC seems to be on an optimistic note,” he said.

Chong added that MCA had worked to ensure the students were entitled to many government benefits, stressing that while technical issues could not be resolved overnight, the party would never give up nor change its position on the UEC.

The UEC is a standardised examination taken by the students of all the 60 Chinese independent secondary schools in Malaysia.

It is recognised by various international universities including Oxford University.
