KAJANG: The results of the Kajang by-election, which sees a straight fight between MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, will be known by 9pm today.
Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said barring any unforeseen circumstances, the results would be known around that time.
“We hope that the results from all the 16 polling centres can be tallied without any hitches,” he added.
The EC is expecting today’s voter turnout to be around 80%.
In the May 5 general election, around 88% voters cast their ballots.
Turnout for advanced voting held on March 19 involving 1,197 police personnel and their spouse was 88.39% or 1,050 voters.
Kajang has 39,278 registered voters of which 48.5% (19,050 voters) are Malays, 40.28% (15,823 voters) are Chinese, 10.29% (4,040 voters) are Indians, and the rest are Sabah and Sarawak bumiputra and orang asli.
The Meteorological Department has forecast generally fine weather on polling day.
Its director-general Datuk Che Gayah Ismail, however, said intermittent rain was expected in the afternoon.
The by-election has been necessitated by the resignation of PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh on Jan 27.
