SEPANG: The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) is awaiting confirmation from Vietnam about two huge oil slicks that were located off the southern coast of the country Saturday.

Director-general Datuk Azharudin Abd Rahman said they have not received any news about the discovery of the oil slicks said to be consistent with fuel from a crashed jetliner.

"I read the news report but there is no official announcement from them," he told reporters here.

Vietnam's Civil Aviation Department reportedly spotted two large oil slicks that authorities suspect could be from the MAS MH370 plane that went missing early Saturday.

A statement said the slicks, each between 10km and 15km long, and 500m apart, were spotted some 140m south of Tho Chu island off southern Vietnam.

The statement said the slicks were consistent with the kind that would be left by fuel from a crashed jetliner.

The MAS' Boeing 777-200 jet disappeared from radar screens with 239 people on board en route to Beijing after taking off from KL International Airport at 12.41am.
