Kajang by-election: Anwar welcomes Barisan’s assurance on polls decorum

KAJANG: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed Barisan Nasional’s assurance that candidates in the Kajang poll will not be subjected to any personal attack.

The opposition leader, who is the PKR candidate for the March 23 by-election, said he supported the move and had also advised his election machinery to avoid character assassination.

“I think there is nothing wrong in going on the offensive and take part in healthy debates. This is what election is all about,” he said during his meeting with the Hulu Langat taxi drivers association, here, yesterday.

Barisan deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin assured Kajang voters on Monday that the coalition would observe the decorum of elections and would refrain from character assassination.

While addressing the association members, Anwar pledged to raise the issues that concern Kajang voters during his debate in Parliament as Opposition leader on March 11.

He said even though he was “not yet” their representative, he would highlight their problems in the Dewan Rakyat.

“March 11 will be a very busy day as in the morning I will submit my nomination papers after which I wish rush to Parliament for my turn to debate. But rest assured even though I will be busy rushing from one place to another I will still present your plights to the Government,” he said.
