Khalid: Rafizi making baseless assumptions over water deal

KAJANG: Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (pic) has ticked off PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli for making “baseless assumptions” over the water deal between the Selangor and federal governments.

He said Rafizi’s claims that the state would have to fork out at least RM20bil to concessionaries following the agreement was “way off base”.

The Mentri Besar said the figure did not tally with the statistics obtained from the state government and the National Water Service Commission (SPAN).

“The claims were untrue and made on baseless assumptions. We will continue to explain the details of the MoU in a series of open dialogues,” he told a news conference after launching the party’s election media operations room here yesterday.

Khalid was responding to Rafizi’s allegations that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the state and the federal governments was lopsided and “a loss for the people of Selangor”.

Last Wednesday, the Selangor and federal governments signed the MoU to facilitate the implementation of the Langat 2 project.

Asked if the MoU would pave the way for a sudden increase in the state’s water tariff, as claimed by Rafizi, Khalid said it would be embarrassing if the state had agreed to such a lopsided deal.

“The main reason why we signed the deal was to cancel off the previous water tariff deals with Syabas – to make water cheaper for the rakyat,” he said.

Khalid said the state government would declassify the MoU, but could only do so after going through a few official procedures.
