KOTA TINGGI: Felda Semenchu Wanita Umno branch chief Zalifah Jamaluddin (pic), who was believed to have been murdered following a break-in at her home here on Friday, had died of suffocation.
She was believed to have been smothered with a towel, causing her to suffocate to death.
Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Rahmat Othman said the post-mortem conducted on the 68-year-old victim revealed that she had also suffered injuries in the inner part of her eyes and one of her rib bones was broken.
“Initial investigation showed no visible injuries on her body but the post-mortem results showed that Zalifah died due to suffocation and sustained internal injuries.
“Police also found a small towel at the scene, believed to have been used to suffocate the victim,” he said yesterday.
Supt Rahmat said police had detained a suspect, believed to be a drug addict, to assist in their investigations into the case.
“The suspect was detained in Felda Semenchu a few hours after the victim was found dead.
“We believe that the motive of the attack was robbery, as the victim owned several businesses and lived alone,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
Zalifah’s body was found sprawled on the floor of her bedroom by her son, who had stopped by at his mother’s house in Felda Semenchu at about 12.20pm on Friday.
The son, in his 30s, immediately alerted the Telok Sengat police station.
He told police he suspected his mother had been robbed and murdered as the door was left unlocked and the entire house was in a mess.
