DPM: Philippines peace deal beneficial to country

SANDAKAN: The comprehensive peace deal between Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front is set to benefit not only the Philippines but also Malaysia, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

According to Muhyiddin, the peace deal facilitated by Malaysia was likely to resolve the unrest in the southern part of Philippines as well as solve various issues, including the entry of illegal immigrants into Malaysia.

He said close relations between Malaysian and the Philippines is an important step that helped seal the peace deal, set to be signed later this month, for the Bangsamoro people and pave the way for mutual benefit for the two neighbouring countries.

“Through the signing of the peace deal, the southern Philippines region which is adjacent to our country will become more peaceful and focused towards implementation of development for the people,” he said after handing over the People’s Housing Project at Sungai Manila here yesterday.

Earlier, Muhyiddin said the government was committed to provide affordable housing for all Malaysians, and this was reflected in the setting up of the National Housing Council chaired by the Prime Minister.

He added that various policies were discussed to ensure that affordable housing schemes throughout the country would be implemented for the benefit of the people.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, arrived in Sabah yesterday for a two-day visit, also visited the Sandakan Vocational College.

He said his ministry has approved RM60mil for the college to be moved to the Sandakan Education Hub area as its current premises was no longer suitable.
