KOTA KINABALU: A police constable was arrested after he grabbed a pistol and drove off in a police vehicle from the Tawau station without authorisation in an apparent show of unhappiness.
It is learnt that the constable became agitated when he found out he was listed as one of the personnel who would be transferred to another police station.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the constable, in his 30s, was arrested after he finally pulled over about 600m away from the police station during the 12.50am incident last Saturday.
A policeman who went after him saw him crying beside the vehicle with the pistol on top of it. He managed to calm him down before taking him back to the police station.
“This is a serious case and he will be charged for stealing the police vehicle as well as the pistol,” said Comm Hamza, adding that the police department would be setting up an integrity unit to monitor staff attitude, work ethics and performance.
He said this was among the recent cases of policemen with disciplinary problems, and such cases would not be taken lightly.
In this respect, Sabah CID chief Senior Asst Comm Omar Mammah said investigations on the constable was still being carried out.
“We will refer the case to the Senior Federal Counsel for further action after that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Comm Hamza said harsher action would be taken against personnel who commit offences within or outside of the department.
He added that the proposed integrity unit would carry out investigations and monitor staff discipline at work.
