'Fielding MCA reflects BN consensus'

KUALA LUMPUR: Fielding a candidate from MCA to represent Barisan Nasional in the Kajang polls reflects the coalition’s strong understanding of each other and the spirit of working within consensus, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Barisan deputy chairman said, despite earlier suggestions that Umno should stand in the by-election, that the coalition believed that MCA was capable of doing the job.

“This by-election will allow MCA’s new leadership under its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his deputy Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong to introduce themselves and gauge the people’s acceptance,” he told reporters.

Muhyiddin announced that Barisan is to field MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun for the March 23 polls.

Chew, 50, was formerly the Petaling Jaya Utara MP, a Senator, Wanita MCA chief and deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister.

Muhyiddin described Chew as a leader who has the calibre and vast experience in politics.

“We are not only fielding a woman but also a vice-president in MCA for this battle. This shows that we take this by-election seriously,” he said.

Although there were earlier calls for Barisan to abandon the Kajang polls, Muhyiddin said it could not allow Pakatan Rakyat to secure the seat without a fight.

“The Opposition will obviously be feeding the people with not only wrong information but also lies so we need to be able to explain ourselves.

“If we don’t contest, voters will only get one side of the story and we won’t be able too defend ourselves,” he added.

Asked of Barisan’s chances, Muhyiddin said: “No one enters a competition to lose,” adding that the coalition would give the Opposition a good fight for the Kajang seat.

He said there were voters who were unhappy with the “Kajang Move” and this might be an advantage for Barisan.

He said component parties had pledged to support MCA by sending their members and election machinery to woo Kajang’s 38,000-odd voters.
