Firemen trying to put out the fire at the factory in Johor Baru
JOHOR BARU: Fires broke out in succession at two separate locations in the Kempas industrial area here on Saturday.
Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen as far as Gelang Patah, more than 25km away.
It took 23 firemen from the Kangkar Pulai, Johor Baru and Taman Univeristi stations six hours to bring the fires under control.
The first fire occurred along Jalan Permatang Utama at around 4.30pm, razing some 0.2ha of bushes.
Fire and Rescue Department assistant chief Rafiee A. Karim said they managed to control the bushfire by around 7.30pm.
“By that time, two of our fire engines had almost run out of water.
"That was when we realised that a second fire had broken out at a factory nearby,” he said.
A third fire engine was sent to the recycled material factory but the fire spread quickly due to the strong winds, dry weather and materials stored there.
The fire truck was quickly drained off its water and firemen had to connect 12 rolls of hoses to obtain water from a petrol station some 400m away.
“We managed the control the fire at around 9pm. Luckily no one was hurt in both fires,” Rafiee said.
He added that three workers’ quarters within the factory were destroyed.
