Taib will give advice only if asked after stepping down

KUCHING: Outgoing Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will not interfere in the running of the state once he steps down from office.

Describing his successor Tan Sri Adenan Satem as an experienced leader, Taib said he would only offer advice if he was asked for it.

“We have been growing up together, sharing a lot of experiences whether in development or in politics. He probably knows as much as I do about what to do.

Taib is widely tipped to be appointed Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) when he steps down.

“I don’t know whether he would need any advice from me. If he does, I think the post of Governor is a position where you can pass your experience to the governing leadership but only if they ask,” he told a press conference at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here Friday.

In remarks which clearly indicated that he will take over as the next Head of State, Taib said he was willing to give his views informally to Adenan but it was up to the incoming Chief Minister to accept it or not.

“If the new leadership feels that they want my views, I’m willing to give it for all it’s worth. But I’m not sure whether he should ask me for public advice.

“Mine is advice in a different sense from his advice to me. His advice to me will be quite mandatory. I must follow it as the Head of State. But my advice to him is just one of the opinions he has to gather if he needs it,” he said, referring to the

Governor’s traditional role to act on the advice of the Chief Minister.

Taib also said the state needed only one boss, who was the Chief Minister.

“The responsibility is his. If there is a mistake he will have to bear it and if there’s credit he will earn it. This has been practised in Malaysia whether at Federal or state level so I don’t see any problem at all,” he said.

Taib, 77, will step down as Chief Minister next Friday, which is also the date when the current Governor Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin’s term ends.

Taib is expected to take up the position of Governor the following day in a ceremony at the State Legislative Assembly Complex.
