KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun is the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kajang state by-election.
Deputy Umno president and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced Chew's candidacy at a press conference in Barisan's headquarters here at 3pm on Friday.
He said Barisan had decided to contest, and the choice of candidate was made after a series of discussions among the coalition's leaders.
Chew, 50, won an MCA vice-president's post at the party elections on Dec 21 last year.
She is formerly a Petaling Jaya Utara MP, Senator and Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister.
Chew is also a former Wanita MCA national chairman and Selangor Wanita MCA chairman.
Besides Chew, those present at the announcement include MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong who heads the party's election campaign for this by-election, secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan and other Barisan component party leaders.
The seat fell vacant following the resignation of its PKR assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh last month.
The fight is expected to be crowded, and the other contenders are PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former PKR leader Datuk Zaid Ibrahim as independent candidate.
Also expected to join the fray are Anwar's former ally Datuk S. Nallakaruppan, lawyer Yuktes Vijay and dangdut singer Herman Tino.
