PETALING JAYA: Dangdut singer Herman Tino (pic) has expressed interest in contesting in the Kajang by-election, starting the hashtag #Herman4Kajang on Twitter.
The sexagenarian, who topped
the charts in the 1980s with his
dangdut beats, had created the #Herman4Kajang tweeter handle to gauge reaction to his intention to contest the seat.
Herman said he would only contest if the people in Kajang gave him the greenlight.
“I will wait for the online cue from Kajang constituents over the next 10 days before making a final decision. I must seek the constituents’ permission because I am residing elsewhere — in Tanjung Karang,” said Herman.
He is among five candidates who have so far expressed interest in standing in the Kajang state seat, which PKR had announced would be contested by its leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Others are former PKR leader Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, Anwar’s former ally Datuk S. Nallakaruppan and lawyer Yuktes Vijay.
Barisan Nasional has yet to officially name its candidate.
“I want to contest in Kajang as a mark of protest against Anwar’s attempt to take over the mentri besar’s post,” said Herman, whose real name is Masrum Tamsi.
Herman said, as a native of Selangor, he did not want to see the state falling prey to deceptive political games.
“It is high time we say no to political bullying. We need far-sighted leaders who draw plans in the interest of the public, and not one who schemes for personal political gain,” he said.
Herman said he was strongly against any attempt to replace Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as staging a coup d’etat ran foul of the basic principles of democracy.
“I am sure many in Selangor share similar sentiment to prevent Anwar, an outsider, from bulldozing his way to secure the mentri besar’s post,” he said.
Herman had stood as an independent in the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat in the general election and was kicked out of Umno last year.
