KUALA LUMPUR: Lavish dinners at posh restaurants is what Valentine’s Day is all about for many lovebirds today.
According to Visa payment volume data, Malaysians seem to prefer a fancy dinner to flowers and chocolates on the occasion.
They spent 78% more on food, with an average bill of RM291, from Feb 11 to Feb 16 last year.
Spending on flowers only increased 68% while spending on chocolates dropped by 9% during the period.
Thirty8 at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur said it had been fully booked since a week ago.
“We got reservations since early December,” said April Choon, the restaurant’s hostess team leader.
She said many people opted for the more expensive dinner set – RM688++ for two and the city view.
An assistant manager at Sage Restaurant & Wine Bar, which serves French and Japanese nouvelle cuisine, said: “We got calls asking about Valentine’s Day reservations since early January and our restaurant was already fully booked for Feb 14 even before Chinese New Year.”
There are also those who turn to their own kitchen to please their lovers, such as Lee Lee Wei, a 21-year-old Monash University student.
“Fried chicken, Thai green curry, beef casserole and nachos are on my list. He does not need a gift because I will be his gift,” she said cheekily.
Others complete their gifts with special thoughts.
“My girlfriend made a card with three coupons I could exchange for things within RM200, 10 meals from my favourite restaurant and a year’s supply of shampoo,” enthused Nestor Tan, 23.
