Grandma saves girl from sexual assault

MALACCA: A gritty volunteer worker saved her seven-year-old adopted granddaughter from further sexual assault by a youth behind a community hall in Telok Mas.

Radziah Ramli (pic), a volunteer with a social organisation here, had taken the girl and her 10-year-old brother to a meeting there at about 9.30am on Sunday.

Two hours later, Radziah found both children missing and went out to check.

“I saw my grandson crying,” she said. “He told me a man had ripped off his sister’s clothes and was doing something to her behind the hall.”

Radziah said she rushed behind to see a youth fondling the naked girl.

“I had to save my granddaughter from the youth so I dashed forward and pulled her away,” said Radziah. “The youth started to punch me and I bit his hand, which made him more angry,’’ recalled the 53-year-old single mother.

She said the youth then pushed her into a drain before trying to flee.

“I hurt my legs, but I screamed to alert the others who were still in the meeting.

“All of them rushed out and caught the youth and handed him over to the police,’’ she added.

She said the girl was still traumatised by her ordeal and is suffering from high fever.

Due to her own diabetic condition, Radziah has to nurse her injured leg with care.

A police spokesman said the case was being probed under Section 354 of the Penal Code for using criminal force with intent to outrage modesty.

The youth has been remanded.
