SHAH ALAM: A Chinese New Year open house at the official residence of Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim took a tragic turn when a seven-year-old girl drowned in the swimming pool.
Amanda Dany Shah had gone there with her parents, who were the food caterers for the event that was organised by the Selangor Women’s Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) on Saturday.
Khalid was attending another function in Kuala Selangor, about 64km away, at the time of the incident.
“The girl was found in the adult pool on the upper level of the house,” said Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Azizman Alias yesterday.
He said investigations revealed Amanda had wandered off by herself while her parents were busy preparing food for the function.
The police received an emergency call at about 4.30pm and a patrol car immediately sped to the house.
According to sources, someone pulled the young girl out of the water and tried to revive her before an ambulance arrived and rushed her to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.
Amanda was pronounced dead at about 7pm.
ACP Azizman said the case has been classified as sudden death.
When the mentri besar was informed of the incident later, he tweeted his condolences to Amanda’s mother, Rini Sutari.
His tweet read: Takziah kepada Puan Rini Sutari & keluarga, katerer Majlis Tahun Baru Cina PEKAWANIS, atas kehilangan puteri Amanda Dany Shah. Al-fatihah.”
(Condolence to Puan Rini Sutari and family, the caterer for the Pekawanis Chinese New Year event, on the loss of your child Amanda Dany Shah. Al-fatihah.)
Khalid’s press secretary Arfa’eza Aziz said there were about 400 guests at the open house, which was held in the hall on the lower level of the house.
