BUKIT MERTAJAM: Firecrackers were thrown into the Bukit Tengah police station here, damaging several glass windows, the main door and the sentry booth.
No one was injured in the 4.50am incident yesterday, Penang CID deputy chief Asst Comm Mohd Nasir Salleh said.
“The bomb squad was called in and a check revealed that the damage was caused by a handful of fire crackers,” he said.
“We are trying to determine the motive behind the incident, which is being investigated under Section 5 of the Explosives Act,” he added.
“The perpetrator threw the firecrackers as he was riding by and then sped off,” ACP Nasir said at the scene yesterday.
Present were Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Azman Abd Lah and district CID chief Deputy Supt Abdul Aziz Ahmad.
ACP Nasir said there were three policemen on duty at the time, adding that two were in the office while another was on his rounds inside the premises.
“We do not have the CCTV footage of the incident but we will seek the footage from nearby premises,” said ACP Nasir.
“I estimate the damages to be between RM10,000 and RM15,000.”
ACP Nasir urged witnesses or those with information to call DSP Abdul Aziz (019-3864212), the district police station (04-5382222) or any police station.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who visited the scene in the afternoon, said the state was willing to help the police by installing a CCTV.
He added that he fully supported the police’s “war against crime” campaign as it would help to ensure that Penang was free from crime.
