Upko probing conversion of 74 villagers

KOTA KINABALU: United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) is investigating claims that a group of 74 villagers in northern Sabah were “tricked” into converting into Islam.

“We found that the conversion process was not conducted in the true spirit of the Federal Constitution that provides for a freedom of worship,” said Upko president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok yesterday.

Sabah Islamic Affairs Department’s outgoing director Amri Suratman said it was up to the Syariah Court to decide whether to retain or cancel the conversion status of the villagers.

Dompok said the villagers could take a legal recourse to reverse the conversion.
