PETALING JAYA: Malaysian food is a hit in New York City where at least five Malaysian-style eateries have earned the “Bib Gourmand” designation by the Michelin Guide.
“Bib Gourmand” is defined on Michelin Travel website as a “highly desired honour among restaurateurs and one that is recognised by the many people who covet quality food at a reasonable price.
Among the restaurants which earned the recognition are Mamak Malaysia, New Malaysia, Fatty Crab, Nyonya and Laut.
On Feb 2, Bernama reported that Mamak Malaysia received a Michelin one-star rating but it has been pointed out that the restaurant received the Bib Gourmand designation instead.
Its Penang-born owner chef Nani Yusof Hughie wrote on Mamak Malaysia’s Facebook page last month that “Bib Gourmand rated Mamak in their Michelin Guide New York City 2014.
A check on Michelin Travel website showed that the restaurant was among 138 unstarred establishments designated as Bib Gourmands. The Bib Gourmand designation was first introduced in Europe’s Michelin Guide in 1997.
