CYBERJAYA: Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek has criticised DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s Chinese New Year video, describing the 12-minute clip as “disgusting, nauseating and done in bad taste”.
Ahmad Shabery also used the term kiasu on the DAP leader, which is a Hokkien slang to describe a person who is afraid of losing out to another.
He used the term on the basis that Kok had allegedly used a festive greeting as a platform to ridicule her party’s political rivals.
“I think it was done in bad taste, and the people will need to evaluate this matter for themselves.
“She (Kok) has portrayed (that she is) kiasu, as if every one else is wrong and that there is nothing right about this country,” Ahmad Shabery said after visiting the Measat Teleport and Broadcast Centre here yesterday.
Kok, a DAP national vice-chairman, is alleged to have uploaded the video clip titled Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014 Video Clip on Youtube on Jan 27.
In the clip, which is in Mandarin but with English subtitles, Kok acted as a “feng shui” talk-show host who discussed various issues with three guests.
The “panellists” poked fun at a variety of issues such as the education system in Malaysia and the Sabah intrusion last year.
A remark made by one of the “guests” on the intrusion that cost the lives of 10 security personnel had angered many.
In George Town, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party would stand by Kok over the issue.
“Her video clip in Mandarin has been twisted by Umno to make it seem racial. She never mentioned the Lahad Datu intrusion incident or anyone’s name in the clip which was uploaded on Jan 27.
“Those who do not understand Mandarin will simply create stories. Don’t believe such accusations,” he said in Komtar yesterday.
