BANGI: Barisan Nasional will not provide an easy passage to other candidates contesting in the Kajang by-election after the state seat has been vacated by its incumbent assemblyman.
Its deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that although the seat was won by PKR in last year’s general election, voters in the area were being given another chance to select their representative.
“There are those who feel that there’s no need (for Barisan) to contest the seat but personally I feel, based on our usual practice, we should provide voters in Kajang with a choice of candidates.
“I don’t think we should make it easy for the Opposition candidate, whether he is (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim or someone else,” he told a news conference after making a surprise check on prices of goods in Section 16, Bandar Baru Bangi here, yesterday.
On Barisan’s choice of candidate for the by-election, Muhyiddin, who is Deputy Prime Minister, said traditionally, the Kajang constituency had been an MCA seat, but the final decision rested with the Prime Minister after discussing with leaders of other component parties.
