Muhyiddin: Highway firms must improve constantly

MUAR: Highway concessionaires must continue to improve services and ensure road users are satisfied, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“The people should also take the opportunity to make use of the infrastructure provided by the Government such as the new elevated interchange in Bukit Gambir,” he said.

The elevated interchange in Bukit Gambir built by PLUS Expressways Bhd at a cost of RM108mil will be opened to traffic today.

The project which began in August 2010 was completed in 38 months.

Located at the 157th kilometre between the elevated interchanges in Tangkak and Pagoh, it will allow motorists just 10 minutes to enter Bukit Gambir town from the North-South Expressway instead of 30 minutes via Tangkak or Pagoh.

Muhyiddin, who launched the new infrastructure, said the interchange was just 5km from the town and would help ease traffic congestion at the Tangkak and Pagoh toll plazas.

Also present were Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof, his deputy Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar and PLUS chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim.

Muhyiddin said the RM108mil project did not include the RM7mil spent by the Federal Government on the acquisition of land.

“I believe the interchange will contribute to the economic growth of Bukit Gambir, encourage new development projects, create more jobs and help the growth of industries especially in the Muar and Ledang districts,” he said.

Muhyiddin said good highway networks would allow road users to travel from one destination to another in a shorter time.

For example, the travelling time from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru used to take eight hours but this was reduced to four hours now with the North-South Expressway.

He said PLUS’ efforts included the upgrading of rest areas in Pagoh and Macap.

The Bukit Gambir interchange is among three elevated interchanges built at a cost of RM250mil by PLUS for the convenience of North-South Expressway users.

The other two elevated interchanges are in Sungai Buaya in Selangor and Alor Pongsu in Perak.
