RON95 may only be for the poor

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government may impose measures for the subsidised RON95 fuel to be available only to low-income earners.

Giving this hint, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said a new fuel pricing policy may take effect in May or June.

“This was proposed several times in the past but we will be implementing it after we find a correct method of applying it,” he said after handing out offer letters to 100 residents qualified to rent low-cost housing units in the city at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall auditorium here yesterday.

Tengku Adnan said the move was in line with tightening government spending and ensuring that all subsidies are enjoyed only by deserving Malaysians.

He said the new approach was being reviewed by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, who is in charge of the economic planning unit.

At present, the price of RON95 is RM2.10 per litre (63 sen subsidised) and the price of RON97 is RM2.80.
