Cops: Group that stole diamond ring may be part of syndicate

KUALA LUMPUR: The group of shoppers and the little girl who got away with a multi-million-ringgit diamond ring from a high-end jewellery boutique in Bukit Bintang a week ago may have been part of an international crime syndicate, the police said.

“We will be seeking help from Interpol to ascertain whether they are part of a well-oiled international crime syndicate,” acting city CID chief Asst Comm Khairi Ahrasa said here yesterday.

He added that police would work with law enforcers from neighbouring countries, especially Singapore, and the boutique’s British-based parent company to track down the suspects.

ACP Khairi said they would work with the Malaysian Association of Hotels in search of the five, who are all believed to be foreigners and may still be in the country.

“We are monitoring airport gates at the KLIA, LCCT and the Subang airport,” he said.

ACP Khairi clarified that the stolen diamond ring was worth RM2.2mil and not RM5.2mil as initially reported.
