PETALING JAYA: MCA Youth’s legal bureau is ready to help the Attorney General’s Chambers prosecute Muhammad Ridzuan Suhaimi, the teacher who allegedly punched Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan on Jan 12.
“The fact is there has been a report of assault and the police have investigated. The AG must act fast, more so when it involves a public figure, as it will affect public confidence and faith in the Attorney General’s Chambers,” said bureau chairman Eric Choo Wei Sern.
Choo, who spoke to The Star yesterday, pointed out that the investigation papers prepared by the police were submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers on Jan 15, adding that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
On Jan 11, Kamalanathan lodged a police report over the alleged assault by Muhammad Ridzuan who is also Hulu Selangor Umno Youth assistant secretary.
Muhammad Ridzuan was reportedly unhappy that his wife, also a teacher, was denied a transfer to Hulu Selangor.
“The police have already submitted the investigation papers to the Attorney General and there has been no action from the Attorney General’s Chambers since, whether there is an issue of fear or favour here, we do not know. How will the public see and perceive the Attorney General’s abilities?” questioned Choo.
Asked whether the MCA Youth Legal Bureau had the power to prosecute considering Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution reads that the discretion to prosecute someone for a criminal offence resides with the Attorney General, Choo said the Attorney General had the power to appoint anyone to prosecute if they were able to do so.
Choo said criminal defence lawyer Tan Hock Chuan appeared for the Attorney General’s Chambers in the Teoh Beng Hock inquest.
“If it is due to a lack of manpower or any other reasons in the Attorney General’s Chambers, we can step in to do it but the discretion and decision to prosecute remains with the Attorney General,” said Khor.
