MARAN: A drug trafficker who assembles his own firearms to protect his turf was arrested by police under Ops Tapis.
Three home-made guns and drugs believed to be heroin and syabu were seized from the suspect, aged 32.
Maran OCPD Deputy Supt Sulaiman Ab Hamid said, acting on a tip-off, police raided an unnumbered house in Kampung Huma Luas near here at about 1.30pm on Friday.
He said besides the illegal firearms, police also seized several psychotropic pills, a live bullet, ball bearings in various sizes, three cellphones, an electronic weighing machine and other paraphernalia to smoke drugs.
“We believe the suspect uses the home-made guns to protect his turf and commit crimes, as well as lease it out to others.
“The illegal firearms were found in the kitchen together with packets and straws of drugs,” he said.
DSP Sulaiman said background checks showed the suspect was jobless, an addict and had a previous record under the Firearms Act 1960 in 2001.
He said the suspect was also active in pushing drugs in the district since last year.
“We are investigating the suspect under several sections of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Section 8 and Section 36 of the Firearms Act.
“The suspect has been remanded for a week to facilitate investigations,” he said.
DSP Sulaiman commended the people for providing information leading to the arrest.
