Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
KUALA LUMPUR: Greedy traders and pro-Pakatan Rakyat middlemen have been alleged to be those responsible for the recent increases in the prices of goods.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said middlemen aligned to Pakatan are deliberately hiking the prices of goods to incite hatred towards Barisan Nasional (BN).
Citing an example, Tengku Adnan said the price of some vegetables in Cameron Highlands were as low as RM1.50, but by the time they arrive at shops and markets in Kuala Lumpur, it would cost up to six to nine Ringgit.
He also called on for traders and businessmen not to take advantage of the increases in electricity tariffs, fuel and sugar to hike up prices.
"The 34sen sugar per kg subsidy was abolished, but it's impossible to see how a cup of tea or coffee has increased by 30sen.
"Are you meaning to say the traders are using a kilogramme of sugar in each cup? This is a clear example of how traders become greedy, take advantage and ultimately the people suffer," he said after launching the Acheh community Malidur Rasul celebrations in Jalan Raja Bot.
Tengku Adnan reminded Muslim businessmen that it was haram (illegal) to make obscene profits and if they failed to abide to commands of their faith, then they would be answerable to Allah.
He also called the people who made fun of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's kangkung (water spinach) example as "stupid".
"They do not understand the meaning of his example whereby the price of goods can go down, such as the kangkung, which is one of the cheapest vegetables around.
"This is the problem of following the Western habit of ridiculing people on social media," he said.
