Jamil Khir: Emulate Prophet Muhammad and exercise moderation

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Muslims have been asked to exercise moderation in life, as practised by Prophet Muhammad.

"Moderation refers to implementing Islamic principles with wisdom.

"This has to be balanced to ensure there is no use of force and oppression as to the rights of other races and religions but, at the same time, Islam has to be upheld," Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said Tuesday.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department also said the Government would continue to check the spread of pluralism in the country.

He said by doing so, it would help contain elements pertaining to freedom which contradicted Islamic teachings and customs.

Speaking at the national-level Maulidur Rasul celebrations at the Putra Mosque here, he said the Islamic Development Department, with the cooperation of state Islamic departments, would work together to safeguard the faith of Muslims in the country.

"Of late, we find various efforts being made to undermine the right to freedom as allowed in Islam, which are not only carried out by certain groups in the country with the support of the new media, but also supported by international liberal groups.

"Hence, if the faith of Muslims is weak and we are unsure about upholding the basic principles of Islam, which form the pillar of life for Muslims, then we will deviate from the true way of life," he added. - Bernama
