Crushed to bits: The pirated DVDs being destroyed during the disposal ceremony at the Petaling Jaya district police station.
PETALING JAYA: RM3.6mil worth of DVDs containing pirated movies have been destroyed by the authorities as part of an effort to curb the sale of the illicit products.
The 354,826 DVDs that were destroyed on Friday constituted only a portion of the discs confiscated from movie pirates in Petaling Jaya between 2005 and 2013, said Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed.
“With over 100 arrests made over the past few years, we have solved 111 cases involving the sale of pirated goods,” he said.
Those caught distributing pirated movies can be prosecuted under the Film Censorship Act, Copyright Act and the Printing Presses and Publications Act.
