Water takeover meet soon

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet Committee on Selangor Water Problem will meet soon to discuss the taking over of the four water concessionaires in the state.

The meeting is to finalise the technical, financial and legal mechanism to invoke Section 114 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006.

Section 144 is to allow the Federal Government, through the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), to take over the operations of the concessionaires on interim and short-term basis.

The four concessionaires are Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd, Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd, Konsortium Abass Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Holdings Bhd.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the Federal Government would like to see the takeover process completed in the shortest time possible.

This, he said, was because the Federal Government would not want to delay the construction of the much-needed Langat 2 water treatment plant.

“There is already acute insufficient water supply not only in Selangor but in Kuala Lumpur as well. The Langat 2 project was supposed to resolve the shortage but it will take three years (to complete), even if work actually starts tomorrow.

“The committee will meet soon to work out the process of taking over of the concessionaires,” he said after the launching of the police Green Practice Blueprint and Green Technology Application here yesterday.

The initiative was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim on Wednesday said that since the negotiations to acquire the concessionaires came to a dead end, the state and federal governments had agreed to invoke Section 114 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006.

He also announced that the state government’s green light for the construction of the Langat 2 plant.

Dr Ongkili added that water problems in Selangor caused 725 new development projects to be put on hold which could tarnish Malaysia’s image as an investment centre.
