Decision soon on kalimah Allah

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will announce a Cabinet decision on the public concerns arising from the issue of non-Muslims using the kalimah Allah.

This follows discussions on the matter at the Cabinet meeting yesterday.

While his colleagues were tight-lipped over the meeting, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said Najib will make an announcement on the matter. “We did (discuss the Allah issue) but the Prime Minister will make the announcement,” he said.

Dr Subramaniam, however, declined to say when the announcement will be made.

“We have all decided that only one voice (Najib) will speak,” he said, when met after the Cabinet meeting.

The concerns surfaced after enforcement officers from the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) seized copies of publications, including the Malay and Iban versions of the Bible, from the premises of the Bible Society of Malaysia in Petaling Jaya on Jan 2.

Unconfirmed reports said several Muslim non-government organisations had planned to protest outside a church in Klang during Sunday mass on Jan 5, but only a group of peacemakers turned up in a show of support for the church.

The kalimah Allah issue and the escalating cost of living were high on the agenda of the new year’s first Cabinet meeting.

It is learnt the ministers spent more than an hour on the contentious Allah issue and they agreed the matter was “complex and sensitive” and needed to be dealt with utmost sensitivity.

A minister said they had a “healthy and active” discussion on the matter. “We agreed the best way to deal with the kalimah Allah issue is through dialogue and engagement.

“The Prime Minister emphasised that his primary concern is peace and harmony among the people,” he said, adding the Cabinet acknowledged that religious matters were under the jurisdiction of the states.

On the Jais raid on the premises of the Bible society, the minister said the Cabinet reviewed the incident from a “big picture” point of view. He declined to elaborate.
