KUALA LUMPUR: The Philippines Embassy conveyed its gratitude to Malaysians who gave aid to Typhoon Haiyan-hit areas in the country.
During a parol-lighting ceremony at the embassy here, ambassador J Eduardo Malaya thanked Malaysians who extended a helping hand for "standing steadfast with the Filipino people."
He also presented the Malaysian Government with a plaque as a token of appreciation for the RM3.2mil cash donation, as well as food and other aid.
Present to accept the plaque was International Trade and Industry Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Rebecca Santa Maria.
Star Publications also received a plaque, accepted by news editor Paul Gabriel.
Other associations present who were thanked for their contributions included Red Cross Red Crescent, Mercy Malaysia, Kelab Umno Putera and the Archdiocese of KL.
Archbishop Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam also shared a few words of spiritual support for the Typhoon Haiyan victims.
Malaya said he was "moved and touched" by the outpouring of solidarity from Malaysians of all walks of life, including students and neighbourhood groups.
He also extended his good wishes to the floodridden Malaysian states of Pahang and Terengganu.
After lighting the parols (star-shaped lanterns), embassy staff performed Christmas carols.
Malaya said the parols were a symbol of renewal and a beacon of hope and resolve to those suffering.
