GEORGE TOWN: A bakery known for its roti benggali (unsliced oven-baked loaves) claimed its business dropped by half in two days after a Malay daily reported that its workers used their feet to knead the dough.
Maliia Bakery shareholder Datuk G. Mariadas said that though the report was about a bakery in Bayan Baru, his regular customers had also stopped buying bread from his outlet.
“I was shocked when I read the article.
“As far as I know, there are only two roti benggali factories in Penang – mine in Transfer Road and another in Air Itam.
“The one mentioned in the article must be just a bread shop or a bakery,” Mariadas said.
“The article was also misleading as it mentioned roti benggali, which is what we have been baking for many years,” he said of the article that appeared on Thursday.
He said the sale of roti benggali had been affected in Penang island, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Taiping, Sungai Petani, Kulim and Parit Buntar.
Mariadas said they would meet with the daily and its reporter tomorrow to seek an apology and clarification.
“We will consider legal action if they do not do so,” he said, adding that they would also meet the state Health department over the matter.
Mariadas said that his bakery used a spiral mixer to knead the dough.
“My chefs and bakers wear masks and gloves when handling the dough and bread,” he said.
Maliia Bakery director Siti Suhailla Mohd Yusoff said the spiral mixer could mix up to 125kg of dough at a time.
