Umno polls: Ku Li says intends to contest for 'lower' position

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno stalwart Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah says he intends to contest for a lower position in the upcoming party polls.

He said he was still consulting with his supporters in the party.

"I do have an intention to contest but for a lower position at the moment. I have not decided to go for any higher position.

"In any case, let us wait for nomination day as I have yet to decide," said the Gua Musang MP and Umno division chief.

The 76-year old Tengku Razaleigh is the country's longest serving MP.

He was first elected in 1969 and served as Kelantan Umno chief for 12 years from 1972 to 1984.

He was also the party vice-president between 1973 and 1981.

In 1987, he challenged Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the Umno presidency and lost by 43 votes.
