KUALA LUMPUR: Packets containing less than 14 cigarettes - dubbed "kiddie packs'' because children can afford to buy them - disappeared from store shelves across Malaysia on Thursday after a long-delayed ban kicked in.

The ban, which was supposed to take effect in September 2004, was postponed several times after tobacco manufacturers and shop owners appealed for government extensions in order to clear unsold stocks.
