A domestic helper left a nine-month-old baby alone at home when she fled from her employer's house in Malacca on Wednesday afternoon. The mother of the baby had suspected something amiss after the maid did not answer her phone calls.
The mother, in her 30s, then rushed home to find the main door left ajar and all the rooms locked. Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue Department officers were deployed to the scene and helped to open the doors.
Operation chief Dzulkarnain Abd Halim said the baby was heard crying inside the kitchen and it took the officers 10 minutes to force open the door. The baby was not harmed.
Melaka Tengah police station confirmed that the family has lodged a report over the missing maid.

While the high tide season brings flood to some areas, crab fishermen from Kampung Telok Gong in Kuala Sungai Baru, Alor Gajah, were all smiles as their catch had multiplied.
Before last weekend, they would return with an average of one to three kilograms of crabs per day.
But it has since exceeded 10kg per day since the high tide phenomenom began on Sept 16.
Serli Saad, 40, said he and his partner would set up to 30 traps some one nautical miles from the shore during high tide and wait for six hours.
"It was difficult to get three kg before the high tide season, but now our fortune has multiplied," Serli said.
