Sunway partners Korean varsities

SUNWAY University and Leading University for Start-up Business Association (LUSBA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently.

The MoU is to collaborate and exchange insights on the development of acceleration programmes and scientific research for the social and economic benefits of both Malaysia and South Korea.

Sunway University vice-chancellor Prof Graeme Wilkinson and LUSBA chairman Kwang Geun Lee signed the MoU.

Representatives made up of professors from 31 universities across South Korea were present at the signing ceremony at Sunway University.

LUSBA, a consultative group of 40 universities is a non-profit organisation, which supports and encourages students and entrepreneurs looking to start their own businesses through incubation and acceleration programmes.

The MoU will pave the way for the participating universities to have various activities, including a two-way flow of human resources, joint research in areas of entrepreneurship and participate in seminars.

“We are delighted to collaborate with LUSBA and look forward to working with the various universities on exciting projects,” said Prof Wilkinson.

In May this year, Sunway University launched its iLabs, a start-up incubator.

Sunway iLabs will run accelerator programmes as well as act as a micro ecosystem in encouraging the development of the start-up ecosystem within the country.

The unique not-for-profit smart partnership concept of iLabs will see Sunway University, Sunway Group, and Sunway Ventures working together in a triple helix innovation model, which combines the strengths of stakeholders across academia, industry and venture capital, plus government support within a collaborative space.

Those present included Sunway Education Group and Sunway University senior executive director Elizabeth Lee, deputy vice-chancellor Prof Pua Eng Chong, provost Prof Peter Heard, School of Science and Technology dean and professor of geology Prof Paul Hoskin.
