A familiar name in school accessories, shows its support for English language learning.

HWA Thong Bags Industries Sdn Bhd, the makers of Swan school bags, shoes, and other accessories, has come a long way since its humble beginnings in a three-storey shop lot back in 1951.

The Swan brand is now a household name among parents and school children alike.

MJ Boutique, a subsidiary of Hwa Thong Bags Industries Sdn Bhd, sponsored 300 subscriptions of The Star’s Step Up pullout to help UPSR pupils.

The mock cheque was presented at their Seventh Annual Luncheon where they also donated towards various charities.

“It’s not just about making profit,” said MJ Boutique’s chief operating officer Ron Ong.

“We also want to give to the less fortunate so that they can have a better chance in life,” he added.

The company has pledged to donate RM1 to the underprivileged for every Swan schoolbag sold.

Audrey Ong, the founder and chairman of Swan Foundation, which handles Hwa Thong Bags’ corporate social responsibility programmes, was present to hand over the mock cheque to Star Publications (M) Bhd senior circulation executive Yap Wan Ying.

“We hope we can continue to contribute to improve the lives of the needy, especially women and children, in years to come,” Audrey said during her speech.

Ron stressed the importance of English as a language that is used worldwide.

“English is widely used. Most big corporations use English as their medium of communication.

“We are sponsoring the Step Up pullouts to help improve the command of English among Malaysian school pupils.

“We would like to give them an advantage in the working world or when they go overseas,” he said.

The Step Up pullout features syllabus-based content which tackles themes set by the Education Ministry and helps prepare pupils for UPSR.

The pullout consists of 17 issues per year, which includes four revision issues in examination format.

A half-year package of 10 issues is available at RM10 through school subscription. Kindly contact The Star’s Step Up team at 1700-81-7788, during office hours, to enquire about subscription packages and sponsorship programmes.

To give Year Six pupils an added advantage in their upcoming UPSR examinations, The Star is organising a UPSR Excellence Camp this year.

Upcoming workshops in Selangor will be held at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, Subang Jaya, on Aug 9 for national schools and on Aug 10 for Chinese vernacular schools.

For more details and registration for the workshops, call The Star Circulation Department at 03-7967-1388 (ext 1131 Siti / ext 1437 Sundar).
