THE fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked a momentous event in world history when it signalled the diminishing Soviet power and the reunification of East Germany and West Germany.

Little of the wall remains today although pieces of concrete purportedly collected from the crushed wall were sold widely in many souvenir stores in the city.
