Simply wonderful: Ow (right) and Yee showing their trophy and mock cheques after winning the MPSP Tower Run 2014 in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam.

IT was a romantic victory for Ow Yong Jin Kuang, 27, and his girlfriend Yee Pei Ni, 24, when they won in their respective categories of the MPSP Tower Run 2014 in Bukit Mertajam.

Ow, a sales advisor, came in first in the Men’s Open category while R&D executive Yee won the Women’s Open.

Yee said Ow’s victory was her motivation to perform well.

“I told myself to do my best when I saw my boyfriend returning as the winner in the Men’s Open, as his category had started 30 minutes earlier,” she said after the recent event.

Ow said that winning was made more meaningful when Yee also won.

He said the two of them first met at another race in Penang in 2012 when they emerged champions in their respective categories. “Thus, this is very memorable for us,” said Ow.

Both of them hoped that more parents would encourage their children to take up outdoor sports as they had noted a decline in young and junior participants throughout the years.

They each took home a medal and RM300 cash prize.

Housekeeper Khir Salleh, 51, who won the Men’s Veteran category, hoped to see more participants in upcoming runs to make it merrier and more competitive.

“The training sessions always pay off whenever I win, but winning among more competitors makes it more worthwhile,” he said.

Khir trained almost every day by running up hilly roads and slopes.

He had also won the run twice since it was first held last year, and also won the Komtar Run and KL Tower Run several times.

The runners were flagged off by Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

“We hope to encourage healthier living among the people, especially the young.

“With support from the public, we are also aiming to organise more and bigger events in the near future,” she said.

The MPSP Tower Run 2014, organised by the council, saw 645 participants running up the headquarters’ 16-storey tower in Bandar Perda.

Participants aged 13 to 75 ran 7km on road within the vicinity then up 412 steps inside the tower during the race, held in collaboration with the Penang Sports Council and Penang Amateur Athletic Association.
