LIVING by the motto “We can’t save the world but we can make a difference”, Glitterama Ladies Charity Group founder Datin Maylene Yong launched her charity album to raise funds for the needy.
The charity album, which consists of 12 songs and 12 music videos, was recently launched at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral.
The event began with a minute of silence as a mark of respect for the passengers and crew of MH17.
After that, a behind-the-scenes video, made by her manager Brian Lee, was shown.
Her close friends Datuk Nancy Yeoh and Datin Winnie Loo, who emceed the event, as well as her vocal teacher Datuk Leonard Tan went on stage to deliver a speech.
Yong was moved to tears when she spoke of the support she received from family and friends.
Even before the album was launched, with the support of friends, she raised RM130,000 for the Handicapped Children’s Welfare Home in Ipoh (Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Cacat Ipoh Perak Darul Ridzuan) and immediately donated the sum directly to the home because they needed cash to construct a new building for the handicapped children.
Yong is no stranger to charity projects.
A firm believer in doing good, she lives by the principle “Blessed are the those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting”.
Since her primary school days in a convent school in Penang, she has been keen on helping the needy and less fortunate. She used to spend some of her recess time at a nearby orphanage to help the nuns look after abandoned babies.
She had her very first solo charity concert in 2002 that raised more than RM120,000 for charity homes around Malaysia.
She was approached by The Red Planet Music Production for this charity album.
All 12 songs were specially arranged to suit her voice and style.
The concept of her album is jazzy and sentimental, containing all-time favourites and music videos by Ludwig Lim and Patrick Yap.
Top Malaysian designers such as Alvin Tay, Andrew Gan, Carven Ong, Dominique Chan, Jonathan Cheng, Jovian Rayke Mandagie, Keith Kee, Melinda Looi, Michael Ong and Titiana sponsored her outfits for the music videos.
Before the end of the press conference, she gave a solo performance of Forever Love and joined the Glitterama Charity Ladies Group for a rendition of What A Beautiful World.
The Glitterama Charity Ladies Group was founded by Yong in 2006 to raise funds for charity.
Forever Love, a song about love and the love for charity, was specially written by Danny Wong, and the music arrangement was done by sound engineer Douglas Khoon.
Proceeds from the sale of the album, which has a minimum price of RM100, will go towards charity organisations.
A tax exemption receipt will be provided to donors.
