A TEAM from The Star visited the Malaysia Entrepreneurs’ Development Association (Persatuan Usahawan Maju Malaysia-PUMM) headquarters recently to promote The Star Business Awards (SOBA) 2014.
Representatives from The Star introduced the awards, which is in its fifth year now, and encouraged PUMM members to join.
PUMM was formed to create a platform for entrepreneurs, especially for SMIs and SMEs, to share knowledge, wisdom and to create new business opportunities through seminars, forums, workshops, business visits, and business study trips.

winning was not everything. Business owners can benefit by just participating.
“Going through the application process, business owners are able to know what they are lacking such as CSR, technology or advertising and promotions.
“This provides good exposure and allows bankers and investors to know about your company and brand,” he said.
Speaking to Chinese entrepreneurs, Looi discovered that many of them did not know about SOBA.
“Some do not read English newspapers. Even for someone like me who reads The Star, I only knew about it two years ago although the awards is in its fifth year.
“Language is a barrier. Some do not know how to fill in the application forms.
“I hope The Star can invite more Chinese entrepreneurs to join, there are many of them who have made it to the international market,” he said.
Looi suggested that The Star utilise its Chinese medium (such as Red Tomato, SH Business Monthly and Chinese radio station 988) to promote SOBA.
He encouraged business owners to take part.
“I have heard that SOBA is a prestigious award, it is not easy to win.
“Aside from our national language, Bahasa Malaysia, English is a widely-used language in the country. Plus, The Star has the highest circulation.
“Winners can have a sense of achievement and this will spur their competitors to do better; this will result in a healthy, competitive market for industry players; which is good for business owners and the country’s economy,” he said.
PUMM Perak state liaison-cum-central committee chairman Lim Kee Siang
suggested that there be winners from each state in Malaysia.
“There are many successful entrepreneurs outside of the Klang Valley but they do not feel they stand a chance to win as those from the Klang Valley normally emerge winners,” he said.
