THE Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is sponsoring RM15,000 for downhill mountain bike racing champion Adam Faroze Ahmed (pic), to cover expenses when he participates in six races this season.
PBAPP chairman Lim Guan Eng said Adam, 26, a Penangite, was a semi-professional downhill mountain bike racer who had been taking part in local and international competitions.
“The sponsorship is in line with the state government and PBAPP’s commitment to support and provide incentives for Penang athletes.
“We want to promote excellence in sports and encourage our sportsmen and sportswomen to excel,” Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, told a press conference at his office in Komtar on Monday.
He said the sponsorship was in recognition of Adam’s national and international achievements.
“Adam has won three races this year, namely the Kenyir MTB Challenge in Terengganu on May 11, the Western Australia State Downhill Race Series 3 in Perth, Australia, (expert category) on May 31, and the Kiara Downhill Domination in Kuala Lumpur on June 8,” he said.
Lim said the sponsorship would help to cover Adam’s expenses in his participation in six races - the Malaysian National Championships/2014 Asean MTB Cup Series 2 in Sabah from Aug 15 to 17, the Japan National Series J1 Winghills on Sept 26 and 27, the UCI Asian Continental Championships in Sumatra, Indonesia, on Oct 31, the Asia Pacific Downhill Challenge in Bali, Indonesia, on Nov 7, the Chiangmai Downhill Challenge in Thailand in November, and the Kuantan Beat My Time Race in Pahang in November.
