Tesco Stores Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s Kasih Ramadan initiative will see the involvement of 49 Tesco stores in a food collection programme.
“The non-perishable food items collected through the programme will be supplied to 46 charitable organisations around the country.
“This is the country’s largest food programme and is in line with our goal of making a difference in people’s lives every day.
“We aim to collect up to RM500,000 worth of food items for the charity homes.
“Tesco is giving a head-start to this programme with RM50,000 in goods,” said Tesco Malaysia chief executive officer Georg Fischer.
Additionally, the hypermarket giant is handing out 60,000 cups of fresh watermelon juice to police and fire stations as well as in 23 stores nationwide. This is in addition to the yearly initiative of giving out bubur lambuk and dates.
“This effort is also to encourage the public to eat healthy during Ramadan,” said Fischer.
Tesco is collaborating with the Welfare Department in the Kasih Ramadan initiative with Woman, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim attending the launch of the programme at Tesco Ara Damansara recently.
Also present were Women, Family and Community Development Ministry’s Strategic Department deputy secretary general Datuk Harjeet Singh and Tesco advisory board chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Abid.
“I think outreach programmes like this are commendable as they encourage Malaysians to give back to those who need help.
“Corporate social responsibility efforts by companies are welcome as the government cannot reach everyone,” she said.
Rohani also suggested Tesco and local stores provide employment opportunities to welfare recipients.
“There are about 400,000 people receiving welfare aid, 50% of whom are productive and can do jobs such as packing, replenishing shelves and collecting trolleys.
“We want productive welfare where the disabled and those aged over 60 can still work if they are able.
“I especially would like to see more support for single parents,” said Rohani.
The event ended with a Sahur Charity Sweep in which nine selected charitable homes participated in a fun grocery race to collect up to RM1,000 worth of goods within 15 minutes.
The winning teams received an additional RM1,000 worth of Tesco vouchers on top of the items they had gathered, while the other homes also took home the items they collected.
