Teng: Public to have access to contractors’ details and value of awards

DETAILS of contracts awarded by the local authorities, including name of contractors and the value of the contract will be made public, said state local government committee chairman Datuk Teng Chang Khim.

The public, he added, would be able to access the information from the official website of the various councils.

He said the information was necessary to keep ratepayers aware of the details of contractors providing services in their respective areas.

“This will give residents the opportunity to communicate directly with the contractors.

“Besides that, this situation will also force the contractors to be on their toes so that they will not be in the bad books of the public,” he said in reply to a question by Shuhaimi Shafie (PKR-Sri Muda).

Teng said the move to reveal the details of the contractors was part of the state’s transparency policy.

In line with the policy, he said, the state had also directed the local councils to place the minutes of the full council meetings on their websites.

“This will allow the public to have better knowledge on decisions taken at the monthly meetings,” he said.

Teng said eight of the total 12 local councils in Selangor were streaming their meetings live on their respective websites.

The public could follow the proceedings from wherever they were through their smartphones or computers, he added.

To a question by Budiman Mohd Zhodi (BN-Sungai Panjang) on why Barisan Nasional candidates were not invited to attend the local councils’ full board meeting, Teng said all elected representatives were allowed to attend.

“The opposition assemblymen can be present among the public as observers,” he said.

To an earlier question from Shuhaimi, he said, the vacancy of local councillors would be filled once the state received the names from the concerned parties.
